Namma Metro Blue Line to Bangalore Airport: What's the Latest Timeline?

Bengaluru's most-awaited metro corridor just got a fresh deadline. The entire 58.19-km Blue Line, which will connect Silk Board Junction to Kempegowda International Airport via KR Puram and Hebbal, is now expected to be completed only by March 2028, compared to the previous deadline of December 2027. The announcement came after Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda inspected ongoing metro works alongside senior BMRCL officials.

The revised plan breaks the corridor into manageable stages rather than a single big-bang launch. Gowda said the Blue Line will open in three stages, aligning deadlines to on-ground complexity. Hebbal–Airport is planned by September 2027, while the KR Puram–Hebbal segment, the toughest, shifts into early 2028. This staggered approach means commuters on the eastern ORR stretch could get metro access well before the airport link itself goes live.

On the ground, Phase 2A - the Silk Board to KR Puram stretch - is in its final stages of testing. The 19.75-km Silk Board Junction-KR Puram (Phase 2A) was in advanced stages, and trial runs from KR Puram to Iblur will begin in October, but train movement between Iblur and Silk Board Junction would be pushed by three months, to December or January. The delay is because of pending works at Marathahalli and Silk Board stations.

Overall construction progress paints an encouraging, if not yet complete, picture. Earlier this month, BMRCL pegged overall airport-corridor progress at 72.75 percent. The scale of the undertaking explains the extended timelines: the Blue Line is being developed under Namma Metro Phase IIA and IIB at an estimated cost of ₹14,788 crore.

Why does this matter so much to daily commuters? The shift matters most on the Outer Ring Road, where 8–10 lakh employees travel daily across more than 500 firms. Until the first sections open, authorities are recommending interim measures. Until the first openings, plan for bus-first commutes and staggered hours on the ORR.

The airport link itself addresses a long-standing gap in the city's transit network. Unlike the Purple, Green and Yellow lines, which primarily serve established residential and commercial neighbourhoods, the Blue Line's entire reason for being is closing Bengaluru's most conspicuous transit gap: India's third-busiest airport by passenger traffic has never had a rail link to the city it serves, forcing every air traveller onto the NH 44 highway through Hebbal and Yelahanka. Once functional, the line will also plug into the wider network. The Blue Line Phase 2B passes through Nagawara, which is also the northern terminus of the Pink Line - an interchange that will link the airport corridor directly to MG Road, Jayadeva Hospital and south Bengaluru.

For homebuyers, the connectivity build-out is already showing up in real estate data. Puravankara's own market research notes that studies on Phase 1 and Phase 2 corridors have shown appreciation of between 15% and 35% in properties located within a walkable distance of metro stations, compared to similar properties further from the line, with North Bengaluru localities along the airport corridor flagged among the most closely watched micro-markets. North Bangalore neighbourhoods such as Hebbal, Thanisandra, Bagalur Road and the Airport Road belt - where Puravankara has an active project pipeline - sit directly along this corridor, making the metro's progress a genuine consideration for anyone evaluating a home purchase in the region.

Reference & FAQ

When will the Namma Metro Blue Line to the airport open?
The full 58.19 km corridor is now targeted for March 2028, pushed back from the earlier December 2027 deadline. The line will open in stages rather than all at once, with different sections becoming operational at different times.
Which section of the Blue Line will open first?
Phase 2A, the Silk Board Junction to KR Puram stretch along the Outer Ring Road, is the most advanced. Trial runs on the KR Puram-Iblur portion begin in October, though the Iblur-Silk Board section may only see train movement by December or January due to pending station works.
When will the airport section specifically open?
The Hebbal to Airport stretch is targeted for September 2027. The KR Puram-Hebbal segment, considered the most challenging part of the project, is expected to be ready only in early 2028.
Why has the Blue Line airport metro been delayed repeatedly?
Delays stem from pending civil works at stations like Marathahalli and Silk Board, along with the complexity of the KR Puram-Hebbal stretch. Metro projects of this scale commonly face land acquisition, utility-shifting, and construction sequencing challenges.
How much of the Blue Line construction is complete?
As of the latest update, BMRCL pegged overall airport-corridor progress at around 72.75 percent. Construction is furthest along on the ORR (Silk Board-KR Puram) section.
Which areas will benefit most from the airport metro?
Localities along the ORR such as HSR Layout, Bellandur, Marathahalli and KR Puram, as well as North Bangalore areas like Hebbal, Yelahanka, Thanisandra and the Airport Road/Bagalur belt, sit directly on the corridor and stand to gain the most from improved connectivity.
Will the metro connect to other existing lines?
Yes. The Blue Line will interchange with the Yellow Line at Silk Board and the Pink Line at Nagawara, letting commuters travel from areas like Electronic City or MG Road to the airport on a connected metro network.
Does metro connectivity actually raise property values?
Data from past Namma Metro phases shows properties within walking distance of stations have appreciated 15-35% more than comparable properties further away, making the airport corridor one of the city's most closely tracked real estate zones.
Are there Puravankara projects along the Blue Line corridor?
Yes. Puravankara has an active project pipeline in North Bangalore along this corridor, including developments on Bagalur Road, Airport Road and Thanisandra Road - areas positioned to benefit as metro construction progresses.
Should homebuyers wait for the metro to open before investing?
Historical trends suggest early entry, before a metro line is operational, often captures the steepest price appreciation. Buyers evaluating projects near the corridor may benefit from acting during the construction phase rather than after commissioning.
