Pune Metro Phase 2: Ramwadi-Wagholi Corridor Cleared

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, which includes the long-awaited Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi corridor (Corridor 2B) as an extension of the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor under Phase-1. This clearance, together with the Vanaz-Chandani Chowk stretch, means these two elevated corridors will span 12.75 km and include 13 stations, connecting fast-developing suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. Within this combined package, the Ramwadi–Wagholi line will run 11.63 km with 11 stations, making it by far the larger of the two extensions and a direct answer to years of demand for rail connectivity along Nagar Road.

The station line-up for this stretch reads like a checklist of East Pune's busiest neighbourhoods. According to the detailed project report, the corridor will accommodate Viman Nagar Station, Somnath Nagar Station, Kharadi Bypass Station, Tulaja Bhavani Station, Ubale Nagar Station, Upper Kharadi Road Station, Wagheshwar Temple Station, Wagholi Station, Siddharth Nagar Station, Bakori Phata Station and Vitthalwadi Station. This alignment threads through Viman Nagar and Kharadi's IT campuses before terminating deep into Wagholi, an area that has grown rapidly on the back of affordable housing and IT-sector jobs but has long lacked mass-transit access.

Financially, the project has seen its cost revised as planning progressed. The Cabinet's final approval pegs the estimated project cost at Rs 3,626.24 crore, to be equally shared by the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral/multilateral agencies, a figure that is lower than the earlier value set at Rs 3,756.58 crore. Within this funding structure, the central and state governments will put in Rs 479.71 crore each, an interest-free loan of Rs 656 crore for land acquisition and construction will be granted by Maharashtra, and Rs 1,867 crore will come via bilateral and multilateral loans. Maha-Metro, the implementing agency, has already floated tenders and begun groundwork; officials have confirmed that Maha Metro will soon float the tender for the 11.63 km extension from Ramwadi to Wagholi and further to Vitthalwadi, which will have 11 stations.

Beyond the metro viaduct itself, this stretch carries added engineering significance because the Ramwadi-Wagholi-Vitthalwadi section will have a double-decker flyover as part of the Pune-Shirur Elevated Corridor project, with costs shared by MSIDC and Maha Metro. Once operational, the new line will plug directly into Pune's wider transit network: the new routes will be integrated with Line-1 (Nigdi–Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi–District Court) at the District Court interchange, supporting seamless multimodal connectivity. Officials have also flagged a longer-term intercity role, noting that intercity bus services from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will connect at Wagholi, allowing passengers to easily access Pune's Metro system.

The scale of expected commuter benefit is significant. Government projections show the incremental daily ridership for the entire Line 2 estimated at 0.96 lakh in 2027, rising to 2.01 lakh by 2037, 2.87 lakh by 2047, and 3.49 lakh by 2057. Local authorities have been pushing hard for this clearance for over a year; Maha-Metro's Managing Director had earlier described it as "a natural extension for the Vanaz to Ramwadi line" that "will expedite the implementation of these lines, providing significant benefits to the residents along Nagar Road," while enhancing accessibility for IT companies, financial institutions, schools, and colleges situated along the corridor.

For homebuyers and investors tracking East Pune, this approval fits into a much bigger metro expansion story. Just months after this clearance, the Cabinet also approved Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug) under Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, with the two projects together spanning a combined 31.636 km and featuring 28 elevated stations, strengthening connectivity across East, South, and West Pune. Taken together, these approvals confirm that Kharadi-Wagholi-Viman Nagar belt is becoming one of Pune's most metro-connected growth corridors, a trend that typically supports steady appreciation in residential values and rental demand along the alignment.

Wagholi itself has already established its identity as an affordable, high-growth residential micro-market, sitting close to the Eon IT Park, Kharadi and Nagar Road commercial belts. With rail-based transit now formally sanctioned, developers active in the locality, including Puravankara through its plotted development in the area, stand to benefit from the improved last-mile access this corridor promises. Homebuyers evaluating Wagholi projects should track Maha-Metro's construction timeline, since the four-year completion target and the scheduled double-decker flyover work will directly shape road access and site visibility in the corridor over the next few years.
