Pune Ring Road & Katraj Flyover: South Pune's Connectivity Push

South Pune's long-standing traffic bottlenecks are finally seeing movement on two fronts that matter most to daily commuters and homebuyers alike: the Katraj Junction flyover and the Pune Ring Road. Both projects, once stuck in prolonged delays, now carry firmer timelines from central and state authorities, offering a clearer picture of how the region's road network will evolve over the next two years.

The Katraj flyover, one of Pune's most-watched infrastructure projects, has faced a difficult journey. The Katraj flyover in Pune faces yet another delay due to persistent land acquisition hurdles, and the project, initially expected in 2024, is now unlikely to be completed before 2026. The foundation stone was laid on September 24, 2021, and the original deadline was February 24, 2024, but due to slow progress, the National Highways Authority of India has already extended the deadline twice. Much of the holdup traces to a specific bottleneck: construction at Rajas Society Chowk has needed 11 key plots to build the descent ramp, of which only 7 have been acquired so far. The project itself is substantial in scope — it costs ₹169.15 crore and includes a six-lane flyover, service roads on both sides, and slip roads to make traffic smoother.

There is, however, a more recent and more official timeline. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways confirmed that the six-lane flyover at Katraj Junction on NH-548DD is targeted for completion in June 2026, while the concreting of service and slip roads along the 41 km Pune–Satara stretch of NH-48 is expected to finish by June 2027. The ministry also noted that regular coordination meetings are being held between NHAI, the Pune Municipal Corporation, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority and other state and central agencies to resolve pending issues and speed up project execution.

Separately, commuters should note that the existing Katraj-Kondhwa flyover — a different, already-operational structure — is undergoing maintenance. The Katraj-Kondhwa flyover will be partially closed to vehicular traffic during night hours from August 31 to September 30, between 11 pm and 6 am, to facilitate essential structural repair work. This is a short-term disruption unrelated to the new NH-548DD flyover project.

Zooming out, the Pune Ring Road remains the bigger structural story for south Pune's real estate corridor. The Maharashtra government has set a definitive construction timeline for the Pune Outer Ring Road, with the western corridor scheduled for completion by 2026 and the eastern corridor targeted for 2028, with the project being executed by MSRDC to decongest Pune city roads and improve connectivity across the city's expanding peripheral regions. Progress on the ground backs this up: land acquisition is virtually finished at over 98% completion, enabling continuous groundwork and structural assembly across all construction packages. Heavy on-ground construction, including tunnels and viaducts, started in December 2024 and is targeted for a rolling completion between late 2026 and September 2027.

For south Pune specifically, the ring road's relevance is direct. Key impact zones include southern nodes connecting Khed Shivapur and Katraj, alongside the eastern corridors of Wagholi and Uruli Kanchan and western stretches near Pirangut and Mulshi. This means the Katraj interchange isn't an isolated fix — it is being built to eventually link into the wider 136 km ring network that will let traffic bypass the city core entirely. The financial backing behind this is significant too: the project has secured full financial backing, with the state releasing over ₹17,000 crores dedicated exclusively to direct-purchase land payouts alongside infrastructural loans from HUDCO.

Other connected works are also progressing. The tender process has begun for an elevated road connecting Hadapsar and Yavat, and the state cabinet has approved an elevated road project from Pune to Shirur. Together with the Katraj flyover and Ring Road, these projects point to a coordinated push to decongest Pune's southern and eastern approaches over the 2026-2028 window.

For homebuyers evaluating south Pune, the practical takeaway is straightforward: localities along the NH-48 Pune-Satara stretch and near planned ring road interchanges stand to gain meaningfully once these works are commissioned. Reduced commute times to Hadapsar, Kondhwa, Undri, and the IT corridors of Hinjewadi and Kharadi (via ring road connectivity) are the expected dividend, though buyers should track official completion certificates rather than announced deadlines alone, given the project's history of extensions.
