Bengaluru Metro Blue Line: Trial Runs Begin, Airport Corridor Timeline Revised

Bengaluru's long-awaited airport metro corridor has crossed a significant milestone. According to Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, BMRCL will begin trial runs on the Outer Ring Road stretch of the Blue Line starting October 2026, with the Iblur–Central Silk Board stretch following in December 2026. This marks the first real-world testing phase for a corridor that has been under construction since 2021.

However, homebuyers and daily commuters banking on an early opening should recalibrate expectations. The complete 58.19-km Blue Line, connecting Central Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport, is now expected to become fully operational by March 2028, three months later than the earlier December 2027 target. Officials cite construction challenges along the Hebbal–Kempapura stretch as a key reason for the slippage.

Rather than a single opening day, the corridor will roll out in three distinct stages calibrated to on-ground construction complexity. The Hebbal–Airport section is targeted for completion by September 2027, while the KR Puram–Hebbal segment, widely regarded as the most engineering-intensive portion, is now expected only in early 2028. This staggered approach means IT hub commuters along the ORR could get partial relief well before the full airport link is ready.

Progress on the ground has been steady if not swift. BMRCL pegged overall airport-corridor progress at 72.75 percent, and the project reached a visible milestone in June 2026 when Namma Metro's first driverless train arrived at the Baiyappanahalli depot from BEML's Thippasandra plant, six coaches strong, kicking off static testing ahead of full trials.

The stakes for the ORR corridor are considerable. The shift matters most on the Outer Ring Road, where 8–10 lakh employees travel daily across more than 500 firms, making this one of the most commercially significant stretches in the city. Complicating matters further, a proposed Rs 450-crore white-topping project between October 2026 and January 2027 could overlap with ongoing metro works, raising the risk of traffic gridlock during the trial-run window. Corridor associations have already sought traffic simulations and bus-priority measures before any road overlay begins.

For homebuyers evaluating property along the ORR-East and North Bengaluru belt, spanning Marathahalli, HSR Layout, KR Puram, Hebbal, and onward toward the airport, the staged rollout offers a clearer investment horizon. Areas closer to the Hebbal–Airport section stand to benefit from connectivity roughly six months ahead of the KR Puram–Hebbal stretch, a distinction worth factoring into location decisions for anyone buying with a 2027-28 possession timeline in mind.

While the finish line has moved again, the direction of travel is unmistakable: Bengaluru's ORR and airport-facing micro-markets are entering their final pre-metro phase, with tangible construction milestones now visible on the ground rather than just on paper.
