Hebbal Metro Phase 2: North Bangalore's Critical Transit Milestone

As of July 2026, the Hebbal Metro station has emerged as the most important junction in the Namma Metro Blue Line expansion. The Hebbal Metro station construction is in its advanced stage, and by early 2026, most viaduct work along the Hebbal flyover stretch will have been completed. The focus has now shifted to interior works and system installations. This critical infrastructure development marks a turning point for commuter connectivity across North Bangalore.

This metro station will have 6 platforms totally, for being an interchange of 3 lines - Blue Line, Orange Line and Red Line. The metro station is designed as a multi-modal hub, integrating with the suburban rail network (Hebbala Suburban Station) and providing seamless connectivity to Kempegowda International Airport. A dedicated skywalk will link the Metro platforms directly to the Hebbal suburban railway station. Dedicated BMTC bus bays are being developed below the Metro station for easy city bus access.

The multi-modal integration addresses a longstanding transportation bottleneck. The Hebbal flyover is famous for its long traffic jams. The peak hour traffic at Hebbal Junction will increase from 26,896 at present to 55,948 passenger car units (PCU) by 2051, a rise of 108 per cent, a study by RITES has said, suggesting several additional infrastructures to build a multi-modal integration system which can limit the PCUs to 40935 (52 per cent increase). The coordinated metro-rail-bus design directly responds to this demand surge.

Travel time from Hebbal to Kempegowda International Airport will reduce to under 25 minutes. Estimates indicate a reduction of nearly 30% in private vehicle traffic on the Hebbal flyover. For IT professionals and daily commuters, this represents a fundamental shift in commute reliability. IT professionals working in Sarjapur and Marathahalli can bypass road traffic completely using the Metro.

BMRCL is prioritizing rapid completion. Despite facing several challenges, BMRCL is targeting full operations by late 2026 or early 2027. Priority is being given to completing the Airport Metro link to support the rising number of travellers in North Bangalore. Future plans include a connection to the Kempapura–JP Nagar line under Phase 3, making Hebbal a major interchange station. Once fully operational, Hebbal will function as North Bangalore's central transportation nexus, rivaling established metro hubs in operational complexity and modal integration.
