Anekal Cricket Stadium

The foundation stone for the project was laid on Saturday by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at Suryanagar in Indlawadi, Anekal taluk, marking a major milestone in Karnataka's sports infrastructure push. The Cabinet gave 'in-principle' approval to construct an international-level cricket stadium and sports complex at Anekal taluk in Bengaluru Urban district, at an estimated cost of Rs 2,350 crore.

With a capacity of 80,000 seats, it aims to redefine Karnataka's sports infrastructure, addressing safety and enhancing global event standards. The proposed stadium, which is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 900 crore, is expected to become the second-largest international cricket stadium in the country with a seating capacity of nearly 80,000 spectators. The project is located 40 kms drive from the capital city.

Why This Matters for the Region

The ambitious project, cleared by the state Cabinet in October 2025 following the tragic stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in June 2025 that claimed 11 lives during RCB victory celebrations, is among three alternative venues considered by the government. Designed with modern crowd-management features, Anekal Stadium aims to reduce overcrowding and safety limitations exposed at Chinnaswamy.

Project Scope and Infrastructure

The stadium and sports complex will be built on 75 acres at Suryanagar Fourth Stage Extension, Indlavadi village. The stadium will have a seating capacity of 80,000 and include facilities for 24 indoor and outdoor sports, as well as a 3,000-seat auditorium. Seating will be categorised into general admission (76,200 seats), VIP (2,000 seats), VVIP (1,000 seats), and 800 seats reserved for wheelchair users and companion access.

Real Estate and Regional Development Impact

Experts believe the stadium could also stimulate regional development, generate employment, and boost tourism in the Anekal area. Upcoming connectivity improvements, particularly through the proposed Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR), could further strengthen the investment appeal of Suryanagar, Anekal, and surrounding southern Bengaluru micro-markets. The STRR connectivity will improve access across key industrial and residential corridors around Bengaluru, making these regions well-positioned to evolve into Bengaluru's next high-growth urban cluster. Improved infrastructure and rising commercial activity in the region could increase demand for residential plots, apartments, and mixed-use developments.

Timeline and Future Phases

The first phase of the project is estimated to cost ₹950 crore. It will primarily focus on constructing the stadium, developing connecting roads, and carrying out related infrastructure work. Authorities aim to complete this phase within three years.
